Ao lado da cidade de Pergamo, existia uma colina com
aproximadamente 300 metros de altura. Neste lugar havia vários santuários
dedicados aos deuses dos gregos e romanos. O monte estava entregue totalmente a
idolatria. A deusa Athena era adorada ali, num templo muito suntuoso.
Esculápio, deus da Medicina, cujo símbolo era uma serpente, também recebia
cultos naquele lugar. E por fim, havia o grande altar dedicado a Zeus, o deus
maior do panteão dos gregos. A expressão
trono de satanás, proferida por Jesus, referia a esse altar e ao culto
destinado para tal divindade (zeus).
Beside the city of Pergamum, there was a hill about 300 feet high. In this placethere were several shrines to the gods of the Greeks and Romans. The mountain was given totally to idolatry. The goddess Athena was worshiped here, in a verysumptuous temple. Asclepius, god of medicine, whose symbol was a serpent, also received services there. And finally, there was the great altar dedicated to Zeus, the god of the pantheon of most Greeks. The expression throne of Satan, delivered by Jesus, referring to the altar and worship designed for this deity (Zeus).
